Lovely Complex - Episode 1 () 24m
Risa is a very tall and strong girl, and Otani a very height-challenged boy. Shortly after their first day of summer-school, they have a chance meeting, and they start right-off not getting along. On top of that, one of their teachers dubs them "Hanshin-Kyoujin," the name of a comedy team where one member is very tall, and the other short (think Oliver and Hardy). They quickly find they share classes together, and are constantly quarreling and sniping at each other. However, when Risa becomes attracted to a new student, she asks Otani for help getting her an opening with him. Otani agrees, as long as she does the same. They attempt to work their agreement at school, the "pool," and a shrine festival, but, for some reason, things just seem to go wrong for them, and right, for their romantic interests (isn't this true for almost all romantic comedies?). Through this, they begin to find out how much alike they are. [gdh]
Lucky Star - Episode 1 () 24m
A slice-of-life, school comedy, in the vein of Azumanga Daioh, and Today in Class 5-2. This one centers around the high-school girls (even though the character art makes them seem like grade-schoolers), Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa, and Miyuki. Often humorous and quirky, this is probably the most subtle and laid-back of the shows of it's kind.
Konata is a very bright and athletic girl. However, her addiction to on-line roleplaying games and anime has her school attitude closer to lazy and uninterested. We follow her and her three friends through the day as they start off discussing things like "the proper way to eat creme-horns" and other sweets. [gdh]
Renkin San-kyuu Magical? Pokaan - Episode 1 () 24m
Four princesses have come to the Human world, from the Magical world, and are living in a large tree-house. Liru is a werewolf, Pachira, a vampire, Uma, a witch, and Aiko, a frankenstein-like created android. They are very unfamiliar with this world they find themselves in, and this leads to many misunderstandings and odd encounters. At the start, Pachira finds herself ogled at by a panty-enthusiast, and captured by an odd woman trying to prove the existence of mythical beings. Later on, the girls find themselves feeling left out, when they observe the mail carrier delivering mail to every house on the block, except theirs. Definitely cute, with little bits of ecchi-ness (and nasal blood-loss). [gdh]
Murder Princess - OVA 1 () 25m
Doctor Akamashi, with the help of several monsters and the pink-haired android dolls he created, have staged a coup d'etat in the country of Forland. During the coup, the king is given a lethal blow, and he instructs princess Arita to flee. With guards, she does so, but is intercepted quickly in the forest by an incredibly fast monster. In seconds, her guards are dead, and she races blindly through the trees. At cliff's-edge she runs into Pharis, a brutal and strong bounty-hunter. When the monster catches up, Arita in her fear, causes them both to fall off the cliff, and for an unknown reason, their souls are swapped. Realizing what has happened, Arita begs Pharis and her companions to take over the throne, in order to protect her kingdom.
This starts out with all sorts of random creatures popping up everywhere, only because it occurs in a fantasy setting. This, by itself, made this feel like a poorly populated D&D game. It does have a few interesting points, i.e., after all the king's men-at-arms are killed, they are clearly seen, later, piled up in a corner of the throne room. [gdh]
Bleach Saien (Live Action Rock-Musical) -First Part () 130m
This is part one of a two part musical that covers the Bleach "Soul Society" story arc, in which Rukia (a shinigami or death god) is forcefully taken back to the Soul Society from the living world, and imprisoned, due to her breaking of several very serious laws. Ichigo, a rather talented 15-year old, more-or-less shinigami-in-training under her tutelage, vows to rescue her.
The story is told with a large amount of fairly confusing flashbacks, and, in this, the second version of the musical, with songs that erupt from critical points, but with oddly out-of-place melodies. Sadly, the musical talent of the main players was very poor (though, a few of the cast were excellent singers), and due to that and some creative re-sequencing of the tale, the club members could not help themselves but MST this production. Police Squad! - Episode 1 () 25m
The first episode of this short-lived 1982 live-action TV comedy was shown from DVD, before the meeting began, just for fun. Starring Leslie Nielsen, in one of his high-profile slapstick and visual comedy roles after Airplane. Though hilarious and critically acclaimed, this show did not last long (6 episodes) because "the attention span" of the American public was too short to handle a visually intensive gag-packed comedy. The show spawned three live-action films, and gave Nielsen a new career in comedy films.
This episode follows Detective Lieutenant Sergeant Frank Drebbin as he investigates a bank robbery and shooting death of two people. Katherine Leigh Scott of Dark Shadows fame, plays the femme fatale. [gdh] |
